Collection Overview

Biography / History
Margaret Strebel Hartman was an author and genealogist who focused her research on Northern Kentucky.
Scope and Content
The Margaret Strebel Hartman papers contain typescripts and copies of Hartman's historical works, including La Grande Tour of La Belle Rivere, Tradesmen in Newport, 1839-1840, Captain Fowler Claimed between 80,000 and 90,000 Acres of Land in Northern Kentucky, and Tidbits of Northern Kentucky. Hartman wrote La Grande Tour of La Belle Rivere as a script meant to be presented aloud during a tour of historic sites in Kentucky planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America. The tour, which at the beginning closely followed the route of the Ohio River, included Point Pleasant, Ohio, and Maysville, Washington, Campbell Mountain, Blue Licks State Park, Paris, Lexington, Frankfort, and Carrollton in Kentucky. Tradesmen in Newport, 1839-1840 relates the early history of Newport, Kentucky, including the laying out of the town and information on early settlers and tradesmen. It contains an alphabetical list of the residents of Newport taken from the 1839-1840 Cincinnati and Covington Directory. The Tid-Bits of Northern Kentucky History includes the sketches entitled, Wm. S. Bailey of Newport and his Anti-Slavery Newspapers and Dedication Ceremonies Planned for Linden Grove Cemetery in Covington.
