Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- LOUIS EDWARD NOLLAU
- Louis Edward Nollau was born 1883 in Quincy, Illinois. The son of Louis George and Lydia Mueller Nollau, little is known of his early life. He graduated from Manual Training High School, Louisville, in 1902, and received in 1904, a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and in 1908, a Master of Engineering from State College of Kentucky (1916, University of Kentucky). While a student, he was an Instructor, 1904 and after graduation, an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Department, 1911 - 1913. While teaching wood shop and engineering drawing, he was promoted to Professor of Engineering Drawing and was in this position, 1914 - 1953. During his professional tenure, he was named Head of the Department, 1918 - 1939. Because of his interest in photography and the University, Nollau was the first "official" campus photographer. He photographed individuals, buildings, events and scenes on campus during 1904 - 1955. Active as a speaker for the Lexington Camera Club, he lectured on the history of photography, from the discovery of the action of light on silver compounds to this art in his era. Retired in 1953, he was placed on Special Assignment and continued teaching and photographing until his death in 1955. There are other photographers who contributed to the collection: "Kentuckian" (University yearbook) staff, University Public Relations staff, Leon Frankel, James Wells, John Wyatt and unknown individuals.

Because of his interest in photography and the college, Nollau was the first "official" campus photographer. The date span for the majority of the Nollau photographic prints is during Frank McVey's presidency, 1917 - 1940. There are other photographers who contributed to the collection: "Kentuckian" (University yearbook) staff, University Public Relations staff, Leon Frankel, James Wells, John Wyatt and unknown individuals. The date spans for these photographers work are generally 1885 - 1903 and 1941 - 1966. Buildings and Grounds
Scope and Contents note
The Buildings and Grounds sub - series illustrates five predominant campus sectors, Agriculture, Athletics, Engineering, Libraries and Presidential and Student Housing and Life. In the founding of the University, Agriculture and Engineering were the main departments and thus have had many buildings during the University's history. Therefore these buildings dominate the structures devoted to academics. Most of the Agricultural buildings except Scovell Hall have been destroyed and been replaced by modern structures. Engineering buildings featured: "Old" Anderson Hall, Dicker, Norwood, Johnston Solar Laboratory, Mechanical Hall and Wendt Shop have been destroyed and replaced by modern facilities. Athletics and the cadet training facilitated the need for a gymnasium and thus Barker Hall / Buell Armory (1902) provided the space for the "gymnasium" until Alumni Gymnasium (1924) and then Memorial Coliseum (1950) were constructed. Athletics also includes the McLean Stadium (1924) expanded (1948) and Stoll Football Field (1916 - 1972). The need for a central campus library was realized when President Patterson and Andrew Carnegie collaborated to build the Carnegie Library (1909). Because of the University's growth, Margaret I. King Library was constructed in 1931 and later named for the first University librarian. There are also images of the King Annex added to M. I. King Library in 1963. University Presidential homes are exhibited: Patterson House (1883) which later became the Faculty Club and was destroyed in 1967 to make room for the Patterson Office Tower. Maxwell Place was purchased in 1917 and presently is the President's home. In the Maxwell Place section, campus speakers and dignitaries visit the President's home including Eleanor Roosevelt, Princess Knopotkin, Sir Leslie MacKenzie and Lady MacKenzie and various in and out of state University Presidents. Alumni / student, faculty, Board of Trustees and McVey family luncheons and teas are included in this file.
Student Housing is represented by the first Men's dormitory, White Hall (1882) to Bowman Hall (1949). Women's dormitories begin with Patterson Hall (1904) and end with Holmes Hall (1958) with the emphasis on the older residence halls. Cooperstown was built in 1947 to accomodate the veteran's return to the University and the need for married student quarters. The Student Union / Center was constructed in 1937 to provide the student population with activities and modern eating facilities. Fraternities is a section for only men students as the sorority houses were not included in the Buildings and Grounds sub - series of this collection. Fraternity and Sorority life can be viewed in the Campus Activities and Events sub - series. Another point of interest is the fact that the Barracks refer to the buildings constructed during World I to house soldiers who trained on the University's campus. These structures were destroyed by fire or the wrecking ball as recently as circa 1994 and no longer exist on campus. The Agricultural Buildings (except for Scovell Hall), Anderson Hall, Carnegie Library, Commandant's House, Dicker Hall, Engineering Quadrangle, Heating Plant / Smokestack, Mechanical Hall, Neville Hall, Observatory, Original buildings (located on the Ashland Estate and Woodland Farm), President Patterson's House, Wendt Shop and White Hall are also among the buildings destroyed to make room for other buildings. All other buildings besides the previously mentioned demolished structures remain on the University's campus. To Note: Administration Building fire, May 15, 2001 gutted this 1882 building which housed the primary offices of the central administration of the University, suffered extensive damage to both its structure and contents. Completion of this renovation / building project is scheduled for 2003. The Administration Building is prevalent not only in this series but also in Campus Scenes and Views as well as scattered throughout the collection.

Scope and Contents note
Home Economics was part of the College of Agriculture until 1916 and the name was changed to the College of Human Environmental Sciences in 1991. The majority of the prints are circa 1931 and the classes represented in this collection are cooking, sewing, interior decorating and domestic science which included table setting and shelf organization. The practice house where the students lived their senior year is the site for many activities and is also shown in Buildings and Grounds. This college was represented by female students until recent history.
