Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Jane Gentry Vance was born on February 9, 1941 to Charles Blanding Gentry and Dixie Walker Gentry and grew up on the family farm in Athens, Fayette County, Kentucky. She attended Tates Creek High School in Lexington before matriculating to Hollins College in Virginia from 1959-1963. At Hollins College she studied under the founder of Hollins' Creative Writing Program, Louis D. Rubin, and he remained her mentor and friend until his death in 2013. Vance also attended Brandeis University (M.A.), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Ph.D.). In 1971, she returned to live in the Lexington, Kentucky area and began teaching at Georgetown College and then at the University Of Kentucky. She taught classes for UK's Department of English and Honors Program until her retirement after forty years. In addition to her role as professor, Vance led many writing workshops around the country, wrote reviews for journals and newspapers, published articles, and participated in church events at St. John's Episcopal Church in Versailles, Kentucky. She published two collections of her poetry, A Garden in Kentucky (Louisiana State University Press, 1996) and Portrait of an Artist as a White Pig (Louisiana State University Press, 2006). Jane Gentry Vance served as Kentucky Poet Laureate from 2007-2008, a position which required her to speak and give readings throughout the commonwealth nearly everyday.
- Vance had an interest in her family genealogy and the region, which led her to write with a fellow Athenian, Babe Lamb, a history of Athens, Kentucky printed in 1986. Vance inherited photographs and keepsakes of her paternal grandmother's sister, Tommie House Kane, 1886-1980, the first female licensed pilot in Kentucky and author. Jane Gentry Vance had two daughters, Lucy and Susannah, and raised them in Versailles, Kentucky. Vance died from cancer on October 2, 2014.

- Scope and Content
- The Jane Gentry Vance papers (dated 1890-2015, undated; 21.25 cubic feet; 29 boxes) comprise the correspondence, event records, family and history research, manuscripts, photographs, publications and teacher files of Kentucky Poet Laureate and University of Kentucky Lewis Honors College professor, Jane Gentry Vance. A significant portion of the collection contains contact and promotional content from special events, interviews, readings, and workshops Vance attended and gave throughout the commonwealth as Kentucky Poet Laureate during 2007-2008. Another large portion of the collection includes manuscripts, drafts, revisions, and publications of articles, poems, and reviews authored by Vance. Also present are handouts, letters, papers, notes, and syllabi from Vance's years as a student, as well as her long career as a professor. While most of the collection represents her life as an author and teacher, it also includes personal letters, journals, and family keepsakes. Of note is a scrapbook containing photographs from the beginning of the twentieth century of Vance's aunt, Tommie House Kane's life as an artist in Lexington and Athens, Kentucky.
