Collection Overview

Biography / History
Clergy and Laymen Concerned (CALC) was organized in December 1965 by a group of New York clergymen as a response to the Vietnam War. Several months later a national organization began to emerge with full time staff persons. CALC operated in an ad hoc way for the next five years, hoping the reason for its formation would end.
Beginning in 1970, CALC expanded its concern to broader questions of foreign policy, although the war in Indochina remained its primary focus. In addition, CALC began to play a stronger role in domestic issues raised by African-Americans, women, and other minority groups. Also a more structured organization developed composed of a national committee and staff, along with local committees and field staff.
