Collection Overview

Biography / History
The United States Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Program (AFROTC) at the University of Kentucky, 290th Detachment, was established in 1947. The AFROTC is one of three primary commissioning sources for officers in the United States Air Force and the United States Space Force. The head of the program is an active duty US Air Force officer with the rank of colonel or lieutenant colonel. Students are called "cadets" and participate in the AFROTC for either three or four years of their undergraduate university career, from freshman or sophomore year through senior year. At graduation, cadets receive their commissions and become officers. The program is part of the College of Arts and Sciences as Department of Aerospace Studies. The program nickname is "The Flying Wildcats."
