Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- In 1974, Marketing Appalachia Through the Church (MATCH), a cooperative of craft groups was founded. Nina and Ben Poage created the organization as an outgrowth of the Commission on Religion in Appalachia (CORA) and worked in tandem with the Human/Economic Appalachian Development Corporation (HEAD). After the success of the organization's first Appalachia Handcraft Catalogue, MATCH moved headquarters to Berea, Kentucky and renamed itself, Marketing Appalachia's Traditional Community Handcrafts. MATCH marketed craft products for more than thirty craft groups from nine Appalachian states. Through federal, regional and private foundation grants and loans, MATCH acted as a support network for its predominantly female and low-income member groups. The organization offered workshop training on marketing and financial management. Between 1977 and 1982, MATCH opened three Appalachia Shops in Lexington, Berea, and Cincinnati; a Center for Folk-Art; and a warehouse to fulfill catalog orders. In 1982, due to federal cutbacks, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) reduced more than thirty percent of MATCH's total funding. After the loss of funds and store closings, Nina Poage left her position as Executive Director of MATCH in 1983. MATCH. continued as a small scale non-profit craft support network, directed by David Lollis, until 1989.

- Scope and Content
- The Marketing Appalachia's Traditional Community Handcrafts (MATCH) records (dated 1900-1987, bulk 1970-1987; 63.3 cubic feet; 74 boxes, 2 case folders) comprises administrative, financial, grants and loans, projects, and reports documenting the activities of MATCH and its efforts to promote development in the region through crafts and folk art. The majority of the collection pertains to sales of crafts through MATCH's catalogs and three craft shops. Promotion of craft sales are included in the Advertising and Catalogs series. The financial series includes budgets, invoices, ledgers, receipts, and tax information for sales. The collection includes general information and correspondence of the thirty-four MATCH member craft groups and other social justice focused organizations. The Handex study, printed materials, and related agency information reflect the interest in Appalachian craft groups before and throughout MATCH's service. Meeting plans, minutes, workshops, grant proposals and reports in the collection highlight MATCH's advocacy for and training programs for Appalachian crafts people. Finally, more than 900 photographs, as well as the Story of MATCH film show the production of crafts in Appalachia, craft items for sale and events by MATCH.

Scope and Contents
The Audiovisual series, 1900-1982, undated, contains more than 900 photographs and negatives that document the MATCH program. The series is organized into sub-series by format.
The pictures show the craft shops affiliated with MATCH, products sold in the stores, women, and children modeling the products, crafters, board members, and meetings. The series also includes two photographs that show Berea, Kentucky at the turn of the twentieth century and one that shows Harley Racer and Dr. L.A. Davis. Primarily the photographs date from 1976-1982. The Audiovisual series also includes one audio cassette, a roll of film, thirty-nine slides, and a film reel. The film, audio, and slides show MATCH activities and crafts.

Scope and Contents
The Financial series, 1969-1986, undated, contains accounting files, administrative finances, Appalachia Shop financial documents, budget projections, credit card statements and information, financial reports, inventory, sales records and cash flow, and tax records. The series is organized into sub-series by format. The sub-series are arranged chronologically.
Accounting files contain financial reports, along with the accountant's opinion. This subseries also contains the records of the audits conducted. Amick & Helm was the main firm used by MATCH, although there were others consulted. Administrative finances include expenses, correspondence, pricing, financial resources, and payroll documentation. The Appalachia Shop subseries includes the various sales and financial records of all three Appalachia Shop locations (Berea, Cincinnati, and Lexington). Budget and projections contain the budgets created by MATCH based on income and funding schedules. Credit cards include the statements and other contractual and financial documents sent between MATCH and the credit card companies. Financial reports includes the reports and documentation recorded and sent to funding agencies as well as the board of directors. The inventory subseries includes the various inventories administered throughout all the Appalachia Shop locations, including the warehouse. Sales records and cash flow consist of the general sale and cash records of all the Appalachia Shop locations. Lastly, tax records contain material related to the IRS as well as compiled tax records paid.
