Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence is an independent, non-partisan advocacy group based in Lexington that is dedicated to the improvement of education for all citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The committee formed in October of 1979 when the Council on Higher Education created the Committee on Higher Education in Kentucky's Future and appointed thirty Kentuckians to study the trends and issues that would impact the future of education in the Commonwealth. In 1981, in recognition of its chairman, Edward F. Prichard, Jr., the committee was renamed The Prichard Committee on Higher Education in Kentucky's Future. After the presentation of its 1981 report "In Pursuit of Excellence" to the Council on Higher Education, the committee reorganized, expanded to include seventy-five members, and became the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.
In 1983, the Prichard Committee incorporated as a non-profit institution and under the direction of education advocate Robert Sexton broadened its mission to encompass the study of elementary and secondary education. This shift in the group's mission was rooted in the idea that strengthening early education would better enable higher education to achieve its full potential. Founding executive director Robert Sexton led the Committee into the 21st century, helping it to forge relationships with parents, educators, and citizens throughout Kentucky and launching partnerships to support citizens and schools and to improve education.
Volunteer members and staff of the Prichard Committee continue to advance Kentucky education standards and practices through leadership training and public outreach programs, research on education policy and reform, and publications that provide guidelines and evaluative methods to enhance curricula and learning.

The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence records (dated 1941-2016, undated; 182.44 cubic feet; 230 boxes, 7 oversize boxes) comprise administrative files, project files, meeting materials, correspondence, publications, and audiovisual materials that document the Lexington, Kentucky advocacy group's commitment to promoting and ensuring quality education for all Kentuckians.
The majority of the collection consists of records relating to the Prichard Committee's many programs and partnerships to improve the Kentucky education system. Administrative files demonstrate the Committee's involvement in public policy and community engagement. Project files, meeting materials, and correspondence detail the initiatives by the Committee to enact and support educational reform throughout the Commonwealth, from its involvement with the American Association for Higher Education and the Kentucky Institute for Educational Research to its Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership program to strengthen parent engagement in public education.
Research reports and publications of the Committee describe the issues that have impacted education in Kentucky and detail the Committee's recommendations for advancing Kentucky schools. Audiovisual materials include photographs, audiotapes, and videotapes that document speeches and interviews by founding leaders Robert Sexton and Edward Prichard and reflect the meetings and events of the Committee and its numerous subcommittees, task forces, and affiliates.
Additionally, the collection includes personal files of the Prichard Committee's founding executive director Robert Sexton and articles and research reports on education reform and policy that were collected by Prichard Committee staff.
