Collection Overview

Biography / History
William Stanley Hoole (1903-1990) was an author, educator, and librarian. He served as Director of Libraries for the University of Alabama and produced more than 50 books and 100 articles.
Jesse Hilton Stuart (1906-1984), Kentucky born author and poet, attended Lincoln Memorial University, receiving an A.B. degree in 1929, and Vanderbilt University from 1931 to 1932, studying when "The Fugitives" were active. In 1954 Stuart was chosen by the Kentucky legislature as Poet Laureate of Eastern Kentucky.
James Still (1906-2001) was a poet, short story writer, children's author, novelist, folklorist, teacher and librarian. Although born in Alabama, Still spent most of his life in Kentucky and centered many of his writings around the coal fields of eastern Kentucky.

Scope and Content
The William Stanley Hoole letters consist of two letters to William Stanley Hoole, one from James Still, the other from Jesse Stuart. The letter from Jesse Stuart includes a photograph and discusses Stuarts likes and dislikes regarding food, such as parsnips, turnips, and whiskey. Additionally, Stuart talks about how his love of writing. The letter from James Still thanks Hoole for his kind words in his book column and discusses Still's fledgling writing career.
