The Carolyn Murray-Wooley color transparencies collection (dated 1972-2006, bulk 1975-1988; 0.90 cubic feet; 4,013 items) consists of slides that document stone houses and stone fences, built by local craftsmen, in Kentucky’s Bluegrass region, including many Bluegrass Trust buildings.

Collection Overview

Biography / History: Carolyn Murray-Wooley, author, was born on October 25, 1933. Books authored by Murray-Wooley titles include: Rock Fences of the Bluegrass (Lexington: The University Press of Kentucky, 1992) and Early Stone Houses of Kentucky (Lexington: The University Press of Kentucky, 2008).

Scope and Content: The Carolyn Murray-Wooley color transparencies collection (dated 1972-2006, bulk 1975-1988; 1.08 cubic feet; 4,013 items) consists of slides that document stone houses and stone fences, built by local craftsmen, in Kentucky’s Bluegrass region, including many Bluegrass Trust buildings. Also included in the collection are a number of slides of stone houses and landscape images from outside of Kentucky, primarily Virginia, Pennsylvania and Northern Ireland. Many of these slides were used/taken for her books, for surveys, and presentations/lectures given by Murray-Wooley.

Contents of the Collection

Stone Houses in Kentucky, 1973-2006

Scope and Contents note

Comprised of 2057 images of stone houses, log cabins, wooden barns and other buildings from 52 of Kentucky’s 120 counties, dated 1973-2006. The majority of the images come from Kentucky’s bluegrass region including, Fayette County, Bourbon County, Harrison County, Madison County, and Woodford County. The series also includes several landscape images and a miscellaneous subseries that is made up of geological and landscape maps and charts. The Stone Houses in Kentucky series is organized alphabetically by county into 53 subseries with one miscellaneous subseries at the end. Within each subseries, the slides are arranged numerically by original Kentucky Heritage Council site survey numbers.
