Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Nesbitt family of Sycamore, Illinois consisted of parents Dr. George Washington Nesbitt (1834-1894) and Mary H. Nesbitt (1837-1910) and their children Cora I. Nesbitt Whitney (1856-1939), Lydia J. Nesbitt (1858-1870), George Washington Nesbitt (1869-1944), Dr. John Burke Nesbitt (1873-1922) and infant daughter (1876-1876). Dr. John Nesbitt first married Minnie Isabell Steenrod (1882-1947) in 1905; they two have two child together, John W Nesbitt (1908-1982) and George Nesbitt (1909-1910). Nesbitt married Jessie Delores Doty Nesbitt (1886-1941) in 1913. Nesbitt attended Northwestern University Medical School.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Doctor John Nesbitt letters (dated 1879-1902; 0.08 cubic feet; 3 folders) comprise love letters, letters from horse breeders, and letters from patients sent to Dr. John Burke Nesbitt during the late part of the 19th century while he lived in Sycamore, Illinois. Dr. John Burke Nesbitt received love letters from many different sweethearts from 1889 to 1901. These letters include newspaper clippings of sermons, requests to be called upon, and how his sweethearts wished he would write to them more. The collection also includes letters sent to Dr. George Washington Nesbitt, John's father. Perchon Horses at Eureka Farms in Kansas wrote to George about different horses, their characteristic, and their prices. The patient letters in this collection consist of responses to telegrams and directions sent from John to his patients under his care.
The Doctor John Nesbitt letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letter, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
